Antoinette Dendtler is a dedicated educator who seeks to inspire environmental stewardship and community development in her students. An educator for nearly 30 years, Dr. Dendtler has taught and held various administrative positions within private and public school communities in Pennsylvania and New Mexico. Dr. Dendtler works and volunteers with young urban people and studies how to create interdisciplinary, environmentally-focused courses that improve urban student’s academic achievement. Dr. Dendtler is the Founding Executive Director of Environment Community Opportunity (ECO) Charter School in Camden, New Jersey.

Early Life and Education: 

 Antoinette Dendtler completed her bachelor’s degree in community and regional planning from The College of Wooster in 1994. She taught English and Spanish at Sewickley Academy, a college preparatory academy based in Sewickley, PA, from 1994 to 1996.

She earned her master’s degree in education from Harvard University in 1999. In 2011, Dr. Dendler earned her Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania, where she focused on educational leadership and organizational development.

Career: 

After finishing her undergraduate degree in 1994, Dr. Dendtler taught for two years at Sewickley Academy. She also tutored students in both English and Spanish and coordinated the African American Awareness Club. She served as the Drama Club Assistant Director, writing, producing, and directing Images and Voices of Haiti and The Harlem Renaissance Revisited. While at Sewickley Academy, Dr. Dendtler led the school to record attendance and participation in Black History Month activities. She also served as the Dean of Faculty for the school’s summer immersion program, in which she observed and evaluated 30 student teachers.

In 1996, Dr. Dendtler moved to New Mexico, where she taught English and Ancient History at the Albuquerque Academy. In this role, she reorganized Diversity Day at the academy and created the Celebration of Awareness. She also planned special events with student groups and supported newly enrolled students. She was also the Director of a summer academic enrichment program for 80 students.

From 1999 to 2001, Dr. Dendtler worked at Abington Friends School as the Assistant Director of the Upper School. She managed two upper grades and worked closely with other faculty and staff, including the school counselor, nurse, consulting psychologist, and educational consultant, to ensure student well-being and academic progress.

From 2003 to 2004, she was a fellow at Building Excellent Schools, and in 2004, Dr. Dendtler became a senior fellow at the Environmental Leadership Program.

In 2005, Dr. Drendler founded the Environment Community Opportunity (ECO) Charter School in Camden, New Jersey. She founded ECO to provide additional quality, progressive education options to the children in Camden. She strives to foster active, self-motivated learners, strong communicators, and socially aware. Teaching problem-solving, collaboration, and contributing to their communities are fundamental tenets of Dr. Dendler and ECO’s work. The school closed after the 2021-2022 school year.
