Bob Glass

In Memoriam
1939-2022

Dr. Robert L. Glass was an adjunct professor at Bowie State and retired research chemist for the United States Department of Agriculture. He passed away peacefully with his family on January 15, 2022, at the home of his beloved daughter and son-in-law in Brandywine, Maryland. During his career, Dr. Glass developed mechanisms to describe the effects of pollutant chemicals on the environment. A particular highlight was his critical research on the highly toxic pesticide DDT. Dr. Glass developed several studies following the compound’s degradation in soil and its effects on the soil itself.

Early Life and Education:

Robert Lee Glass was born June 25, 1939, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Ivory Glass, Sr. and Mary White Glass. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1958. He attended Howard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1962. After graduation, in 1963, he chose to serve in the United States Army as a Commissioned Officer, First Lieutenant of the Chemical Corps and was honorably discharged in 1969. In 1974, he received his Doctorate in chemistry from Howard University.

Career:

Dr. Glass began his career as a research scientist with the National Institute of Health (NIH). He transferred to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Beltsville, MD, where he worked for 25 years. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society for several years.

In 1999, he pursued a different career and became a general chemistry professor at Bowie State University. His work made a tremendous impact on his students. He primarily focused on analyzing and characterizing various compounds found in Erythroxylum plants and understanding the effects of herbicides and pesticides on the natural environment. He developed mechanisms to describe the impact of pollutant chemicals on the environment. A particular highlight was his critical research on the highly toxic pesticide DDT.
