“You do have to take actions. But hope is an act of resistance and it combats adversity, and we have the ability to shape our own joy, we have the ability to shape positive outlooks, even in the face of hardship. And thats when we embrace hope. So I tell folks, when you dont wake up in the morning and feeling good, you have to give yourself something to feel good about. And that it requires action” (Bienkowski, 2023).

Early Life and Education:

Martin obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Music from Immaculata University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2003. Martin earned a Master of Science in Human Resources at the University of Maryland University College 2014.

Career:

Martin worked as a Recruitment Advertising Consultant for The Washington Post from 2008 to 2010. In 2011, she joined Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children (CSAAC) as a recruitment manager.

Martin became interested in environmental justice around 2008 when her then three-year-old son was diagnosed with asthma caused by the pollution in their neighborhood. Martin and her family lived in subsidized housing in Prince George’s County, Maryland, adjacent to a busy freeway. Eventually, her environmental activism led her to join Greenpeace in 2013 as the Senior Talent Acquisition Manager.

Martin steadily rose through the ranks at Greenpeace. In 2014, she became the Director of People and Culture, focusing on organizational development and advocating fair treatment for BIPOC employees and women. In 2016, she became Chief of People and Culture. In this position, she fostered a culture of inclusion and equity and spearheaded leadership development and team-building programs. In 2018, Martin became the Chief Operating Officer, where she focused on organizational and leadership change.

In 2021, Martin became co-executive Director at Greenpeace alongside Annie Leonard. The promotion made Martin the organization’s first Black woman in executive leadership. Martin is currently at Greenpeace, where she is an Executive Director. During her tenure at Greenpeace, Martin has supported the organization’s increase of staff of color from 13% to 55% (Bienkowski, 2023).

Martin and Greenpeace work to address the environmental injustices that disproportionately impact low-income and communities of color. The nonpartisan organization seeks to increase and protect voting rights and other democratic tools that affect environmental and climate change issues.
