Anjali Kaul is a trained architect focusing on conservation and environmental philanthropy in Austin, Texas. She is a skilled fundraiser and strategic development expert with almost three decades of experience. Kaul’s work experience includes the City of Austin, the Austin Parks Foundation, and The Trust for Public Land. Kaul has served as a board member on the Board of the Eanes Education Foundation, the Open Door Preschool in Austin, the Environmental Support Center in Washington, D.C., and the Eanes ISD’s District Leadership Team. Kaul currently serves on the board of the Indie Meme, which is an independent film festival.

Early Life and Education: 

Anjali Kaul attended Maharaja SayajiRao University, Baroda, India, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture in 1991. In 1994, Kaul moved to the United States to pursue a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning at The University of Texas, Austin. Kaul also earned a Certificate in Fundraising Management and a Certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership from Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Career: 

Kaul began her architecture career in 1991 as a Project Architect at Sachdev Eggleston Associates in Delhi, India. In 1994, she moved to the United States for graduate school. While at the University at Texas, Austin, she was a Planning Intern for the City of Austin and a Project Associate for the Austin Parks Foundation. After completing her master’s degree in 1995, Kaul joined The Trust for Public Land (TPL) as a Field Representative and Project Associate, working on land acquisition initiatives.

From 1999 to 2006, Kaul was the Director of Development and Development Manager. Kaul raised over $6.5 million in acquisition funds for the national conservation organization’s work in Texas. In this position, Kaul also worked on funding initiatives focused on state and local land conservation and strategic planning. From 2004 to 2006, Kaul was TPL’s Associate State Director, leading the organization through leadership changes and successfully improving relationships with external partners while recovering from budget losses. From 2006 to 2007, Kaul was the Director of Special Projects. Within this position, Kaul raised $850,000 in four months for land acquisition. Along with this, Kaul worked on the Travis County Green-print Project.

In 2007, Kaul left TPL to be an Independent Consultant specializing in resource development, sustainable growth operations, and organizational development for conservation- and youth-focused nonprofits. In 2015, Kaul had a six-month contract as Consultant Executive Director for the South Asian International Volunteers Association. In this position, Kaul worked toward implementing the organization’s strategic plan.

In 2016, Kaul stepped away from consulting to be the Chief Development Officer for the Texas Historical Commission and the Executive Director of the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission. The Texas Historical Commission is a nonprofit that focuses on state historic preservation. Kaul supports the State Agency’s “mission of preserving real places and telling real stories about the history of Texas.”

In 2022, Kaul joined Indie Meme as a Board Member and President. Indie Meme is a nonprofit that holds a film festival for independent cinema from South Asia. Kaul has also served on boards such as the Board of the Eanes Education Foundation, the Open Door Preschool in Austin, the Environmental Support Center in Washington, D.C., and the Eanes ISD’s District Leadership Team.
