Dr. Joseph R.V. Flora is an Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering and College of Engineering and Computing Departments at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Flora researches molecular modeling for environmental reactions, water quality engineering, and computer modeling. He is an Environmental and Chemical Engineer by training and was awarded the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award in 1998 for his work. Dr. Flora has published several academic articles in journals, including the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Science & Technology, and Bioresource Technology, among others.

Early Life and Education: 

Dr. Joseph R. V. Flora received his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the University of the Philippines in 1987. He moved to the United States, where he completed his Master’s in Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. He continued to study environmental engineering at the University of Cincinnati, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1993.

Career: 

After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Flora accepted a position as Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1993. Dr. Flora researches computer models of water quality engineering processes and molecular models of environmental reactions. In 1998, Dr. Flora received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. From 2001 to 2002, Dr. Flora was a Visiting Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Flora is now an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina.
