Carolina Chacon Mendoza is a dedicated community member with experience in local, state, and national campaigns. She is the Coalition Manager for the Alliance for Electric School Buses as part of her consulting business, Carolina Chacon Consulting LLC. Chacon Mendoza advances policy initiatives with the coalition for the equitable transition to electric school buses. She provides consulting on community outreach, education, organizing, communications, and project management.

Early Life and Education:

Carolina Chacon Mendoza grew up in Chile and spent lots of time outdoors, but she does not recall anything specific that led her to pursue an environmental career. She grew up appreciating and caring for the environment and the world because she lived in it and understood how important it was for human well-being and intrinsically. Her appreciation for nature led her to pursue studies at the University of Nevada at Reno, where she completed a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Political Science in 2011.

Career:

Chacon Mendoza worked with KNPB Channel 5 as a Public Affairs Intern in 2010, assisting the Senior Producer and News Director in production, scripting, and editing. She worked as a student writer and intern at the University of Nevada Reno Media Relations during her undergraduate studies. Her responsibilities included drafting media releases and web content highlighting university news, events, and accomplishments. She joined Obama for America as a State Blogger and Digital Media Manager in 2012, where she managed Nevada’s campaign blog, helped register 30,000+ people to vote, and coordinated volunteer events. Building on her knowledge and skills in organizing, she joined Organizing for Action as their State Digital Lead in 213. In this role, she used social media to cultivate political activism to advance Obama’s post-reelection agenda, including training volunteers, drafting social media content, and providing live event coverage.

In 2013, Chacon Mendoza left Organizing for Action to join the Ramirez Group, first as an Associate and later promoted to Principal. As an Associate, Chacon Mendoza used her social media skills to assist in event planning for clientele and to manage the company calendars and databases. In 2014, Mendoza was promoted to Principal, where she served as the Director of Public Relations and Events, overseeing social media, digital marketing, and events planning for clients. The events included fairs with over 10,000+ attendees, fundraising galas, and national conferences. With the organization, she also created an internship and volunteer programs.

Chacon Mendoza opened her consulting practice, Carolina Chacon Consulting, LLC, in 2015. She consults clients on strategic planning, stakeholder outreach, content development, policy advocacy, project management, and media relations, emphasizing exemplifying historically excluded voices from the sector. Some of her clients include the Hispanic Access Foundation, the League of Conservation Voters, The Wilderness Society, and Chispa, among numerous others. Through her consulting business, she serves as Coalition Manager for the Alliance for Electric School Buses, where she is responsible for helping advance advocacy programming at the local, state, and federal levels. The organization seeks to advance the equitable transition and distribution of electric school buses.

While starting her own consulting business was not something she envisioned doing, it became something she realized she needed to do for herself and is among her career highlights. There were numerous challenges, from navigating the system to figuring out the legal requirements, but she highlights that taking that leap of faith was essential for her. Going on eight years now, she still loves her work and is grateful that she took the risk. With her consulting business, Chacon Mendoza has been able to collaborate with many organizations to help advance the causes they are working on, making her work even more meaningful.

Importance of Mentoring:

Chacon Mendoza highlights Michelle Booth from the Ramirez Group as a formative mentor during her early professional career. When working together, Booth was someone she looked up to and could talk with when needed. Chacon Mendoza’s work with Chispa also introduced her to numerous strong and amazing Latina women, including Johana Vicente and Estefany Carrasco Gonzalez. She also cites Alejandra Ramirez Sarate as a key figure who taught her to be particular with her time, ensuring that “every single meeting is worth [her] time.” This advice extends beyond work, ensuring that there is always a purpose for what [she] is doing.

Mentoring Others:

She has mentored others during her nine years with Big Brother Big Sister of Southern Nevada. She also served as a Digital Community Organizing Mentor with the Northern Nevada International Center.

Advice to Young Professionals:

Chacon Mendoza highlights that youth today are values-driven, which is essential to pursuing a meaningful career. She encourages young professionals to find a mission that aligns with their values and go for it, noting that “it’s better to be aligned to a mission and a value than to a person or an organization or a company” because it will ideally “make decisions really easy… if you know what you are really striving towards” (2023). Naturally, she understands it will present challenges, but it will make one’s work much better. Further, she highlights that she is “endlessly impressed” by the youth today and is constantly learning from them.
