Kathy Abusow is the President and CEO of Sustainable Forestry Initiative. With the organization, she advances forest sustainability in the United States and Canada through collaboration, community engagement, and education. Since joining the organization, Abusow has led numerous projects that are dedicated to sustainable development, education, youth engagement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, both at the organization and in the forestry sector more broadly. Beyond her work at SFI, Abusow has led the Greenbuild International Conference "Women in Green Power Plenary Event" for numerous years, in addition to other conferences and forums such as TedX.

Early Life and Education: 

Kathy Abusow attended McGill University for her Bachelor’s degree. She obtained her Master’s degree in Natural Resources at Harvard University in 1994.

Career: 

Abusow is currently the President and CEO of Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc., a U.S. and Canadian-based organization dedicated to forest sustainability and management via collaboration and education. Since joining the non-profit in 2007, she has expanded the organization's foci to include indigenous peoples, academia, governments, educators, local communities, landowners, and conservation groups, among others. Her commitment to community building and education is highlighted through the establishment of programs such as Acquiring Project Learning Tree, a youth environmental education program, the SFI Conservation and Community Grants Program, and the SFI Forest Partners Program. Abusow also established MOUs with Habitat for Humanity International and Canada to support building and supporting sustainable communities. Project Learning Tree Canda (PLT Canada) has helped place over 2,500 youth into green jobs, also helping advance gender equity in a traditionally male-dominated sector. Abusow is further committed to helping advance indigenous rights, helping support Habitat for Humanity's Indigenous Housing Program as well as supporting Indigenous youth through PLT Canada.

In addition to her leadership at SFI, Abusow is a founding member of Nature Canada's Women for Nature Initiative and an Official Member of the Forbes Nonprofit Council. She has spoken and led numerous forums including the Greenbuild International Conference "Women in Green Power breakfast in DC," the Economist's World Forest Summit, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, TEDxWilmington, and Fortune Brainstorm Green.
