Bray Beltrán was born in northern Colombia but moved to Bogotá with his family until he moved to the United States in 2000. Growing up near the Santa Marta shoreline, he witnessed fishermen struggle to survive. This intrigued him as he wondered how they could catch enough fish to make a living while ensuring there were always fish in the sea to catch. Growing up listening to his Abuela’s stories about women making roses out of large fish scales, he was told that the fish were too small now to do so. His Abuela’s stories highlighted how the quality of life could easily be impacted by one’s surroundings, instilling an environmental ethic in Beltrán from an early age. These experiences led Beltrán to pursue biology and environmental science education at the College of Charleston and Arizona State University to find answers to his questions.
Beltrán currently serves as the Director of Ocean Justice at the Ocean Conservancy. He lived in the Northern Rocky Mountains for ten years as an ecologist and conservationist before moving to Washington, D.C., where he has found a renewed connection with the Ocean through ocean conservation and community.
