Dr. Alison Brown is a public health nutritionist and researcher focusing on healthy food access and culturally appropriate nutrition. She is currently the Program Director at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. As a trained nutritionist, she uses civic engagement, community empowerment, education, and training to help advance public health, particularly among communities of color and low-income communities.

Early Life and Education: 

Dr. Alison Brown attended Spelman College for her BS in Chemistry. While at Spelman, she studied abroad at the University of Sussex. She holds an MS in Applied Physiology and Nutrition from Columbia University’s Teachers College and a PhD in Food Policy and Applied Nutrition from The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.

Career: 

Dr. Brown previously worked as a Health and Wellness Professional at the YMCA in New York City, where she helped the Personal Fitness Program conduct member intakes, drafted monthly reports, and designed program incentives (2008-2011). In this role, she established the West Side YMCA Walking Club, which included nutrition and exercise physiology education. During graduate school at Columbia University, she held various internships at organizations, including Harlem United (2010-2011) and Joy Bauer Nutrition (2010-2011). In 2011, she served as a Research Associate for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, where she helped draft reports, factsheets, and letters supporting health and nutrition (2011-2012). Dr. Brown briefly served as a Volunteer and Workshop Facilitator at Common Good City Farm in Washington DC in late 2011 and 2012. Among her responsibilities, she helped structure the Green Tomorrows Program, a fellowship and urban garden training program for low-income residents. She also used her background in health and nutrition to give workshops on healthy eating and cooking.

In 2013, Dr. Brown was selected by the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship as a Boston Schweitzer Fellow (2013-2014). As a Fellow, she developed and implemented a workshop series to reduce obesity and other nutrition-related diseases among low-income communities. The workshop series focused on participant empowerment, intergenerational change, and demonstration. Upon the conclusion of her fellowship, she joined the NAACP as their Community and Civic Engagement Coordinator of the Young Adult Committee (2014-2016). In the role, Dr. Brown conducted community outreach and stakeholder engagement to empower communities and get them involved through events in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank and Franklin Park. In 2015, she was selected as a Community Fellow by the Institute for Nonprofit Practice (2015-2016), which focused on community organizing and mobilization. Further highlighting her expertise in the field, Dr. Brown served as Newsletter Editor for the National Organization of Blacks in Diabetics and Nutrition (2014-2016) and a Fellow in the Office of Racial Equity and Health Improvement at the Boston Public Health Commission (2015-2016).

During her PhD, Dr. Brown worked as a Research Coordinator for the BNORC Pilot Study, which utilized civic engagement to address cardiovascular disease among African American women (2014-2016), and as a Teaching Assistant for Theories of Behavior Change and Introduction to Nutrition (2013-2017). Also, during her doctoral studies, she participated in a two-year professional development program at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a Diversity Leader (2015-2017). She completed her postdoctoral research at Tufts Medical Center, where she analyzed health disparities, insurance stability, and diabetes outcomes and care by race and ethnicity (2017-2018). Dr. Brown is an Adjunct Professor of Nutrition at Prince George's Community College (2019-present) and Program Director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. She began as a Health Policy Science Analyst at the Institute in 2018 before being promoted to her current role in 2020.

Dr. Brown's research and expertise have earned her numerous accolades, including being named one of the 100 inspiring Black Scientists in America by Cell Mentor and 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health by the National Minority Quality Forum. Additionally, she received the Boston Delta Foundation and Pfizer Graduate Research Award, the Tufts Presidential Award for Citizenship and Public Service, and the Gershoff-Simonian Award for Research Excellence in Nutrition Science and Policy from Tufts University, among others. She also previously served as the Chair of the National Organization of Blacks in Nutrition and Dietetics.
