Early Life and Education

Dr. Pedro Diaz Peralta holds a law degree, a Master’s in Environmental Science, and a PhD in Law and Sciences (Toxicology) from the University Complutense of Madrid. His research previously focused on traditional medicine resources; however, as he spent more time in tropical forest areas through university seminars and events, he became interested in human populations’ impact on biodiversity and climate change.

Career

Dr. Peralta previously worked for the European Commission as a Public Health Officer, Auditor, and Desk Officer under the Health and Food Safety Directorate-General (2001-2004; 2012-2021). Between his appointment at the Commission, he served as an Associate Professor of Health Law and Legal Medicine in the Toxicology Department at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2005-2014). Also at the Universidad, he worked as an invited Senior Researcher (2017-2020) and currently lectures at the Department of Administrative Law (2021-present). Dr. Peralta has held research positions at other universities, including Universidade Veiga de Almeida, Rio de Janeiro (2016-2018) and Centro Universitario Fluminense, Campos de Goytacazes (2019-2021) as an invited Investigator. In these positions, he became more interested in the human impacts on biodiversity and climate change, shifting from research on more traditional medicine resources to studying public policies on climate neutrality and action using his background in health and law. In his current role at Yale School of the Environment as a Visiting Fellow, Dr. Peralta develops policy scenarios for health challenges induced by heat waves and intentional/unintentional wildfires.

Dr. Peralta is a reviewer for Revista Espanola de Derecho Agrario (REDA) and Revista de Derecho Europeo (RUE) and a member of the Spanish Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. The Universidade Veiga de Almeida has recognized him, Rio de Janeiro and Camara dos Vereadores do Rio de Janeiro with a Medal of Honor and Motion of Appreciation, respectively.
