Dr. Janet Phoenix is an Assistant Research Professor at George Washington University and a recognized environmental and public health expert. She is the recipient of the Health Policy Fellowship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the previous Director of Health Education for the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, now known as the Alliance for Healthy Housing. In addition, she has served on the CDC Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee and the EPA Children's Health Protection Advisory Committee. Dr. Phoenix's work has helped eliminate lead use and raised awareness about environmental hazards.

Early Life and Education: 

Dr. Janet Phoenix attended the University of Colorado in Denver for her B.A. in Anthropology. She holds a Master of Public Health from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and an M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine. Dr. Phoenix provided consulting for Consulting Women and has served on federal advisory committees, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee and the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee with the Environmental Protection Agency. As a consultant, she has worked internationally to eliminate the use of leaded gasoline. Furthermore, she served as Director of Health Education for the Alliance to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, now known as the Alliance for Healthy Housing. Dr. Phoenix also formerly directed a participatory research project in Washington, D.C., with faith-based organizations and local health and environmental agencies. Her expertise and knowledge have been highly recognized and have appeared in academic journals, television, and other media campaigns. She is an Assistant Research Professor at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health.

Career: 

Dr. Phoenix is an alumnus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where she received a Health Policy Fellowship in 2008 to work on healthcare reform efforts in the United States Senate. During her fellowship, she designed and implemented a program for developmentally disabled children that identified environmental asthma triggers and environmental hazards.
