Colette Pichon-Battle holds over 10 years of experience working with local communities and national leaders to ensure equity in the post-Katrina/post-BP disaster Gulf Coast. As a lawyer, she specializes in immigration and naturalization law, and in 2012, received the Pro Bono Guardian Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association for outstanding legal services for low-income immigrant residents in the Gulf Coast. Pichon-Battle's expertise and contributions to the climate justice movement have earned her other awards, including the 2023 Heinz Award for the Environment, the 2022 Catalyst Award from Rachel's Network, and a recipient of the prestigious Obama Foundation Fellowship in 2019, among others. She currently works at Taproot Earth as a Vision and Initiatives Partner and is also a co-founder of the organization.

Early Life and Education: 

Colette Pichon-Battle is a Louisiana native raised in Bonfouca. She attended Kenyon College for her Bachelor’s in International Studies and holds a J.D. from Southern University Law Center, where she focused on immigration and naturalization law. She received an Honorary Doctorate from Kenyon College in 2018 for her work and community advocacy.

Career: 

Before co-founding Taproot, Pichon-Battle was the Executive Director of The Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy. In her role, she oversaw legal services in immigration and disaster law, helping launch advocacy campaigns to support the local community. With the organization, she helped lead programming focused on equitable climate resilience, work that gained international recognition for her use of the legal and judicial process to achieve environmental goals. In 2022, she left the organization after 17 years to co-found Taproot Earth, where she brings her expertise and dedication to serving others as a Vision and Initiatives Partner. Pichon-Battle is also a Board Member of the U.S. Climate Action Network.

Pichon-Battle has received numerous accolades for contributing to the legal, judicial, and climate space. These awards include the Pro Bono Guardian Award from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the U.S. Civilian Medal of Honor for her work on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, the Young Climate Justice National Fellowship, the Echoing Green Climate Fellowship from Echoing Green, and the 2015 Movement Builder Award from the U.S. Human Rights Network. Furthermore, she was selected as an Obama Fellow in 2019 for her work in Black and Native communities related to climate change and was recognized as a White House Champion of Change for Climate Equity in 2016. Outside of her pursuit to help communities impacted by climate change, Pichon-Battle spends her time in rural Louisiana with the land, water, and people who have nourished her since childhood.
