Preety Bhandari currently holds the position of Senior Advisor within the Global Climate Program and the Finance Center. She offers strategic counsel and direction to the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT 2025) initiative, primarily focusing on climate adaptation, resilience, and addressing loss and damage. She also played various leadership roles in the Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. With a career spanning over three decades, she boasts extensive expertise in environmental issues, climate change, and sustainable development. Her professional journey has taken her across various Asian regions and allowed her to collaborate within multicultural and diverse organizational settings.

Career: 

Preety Bhandari currently holds the position of Senior Advisor within the Global Climate Program and the Finance Center. In her role, she offers strategic counsel and direction to the Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT 2025) initiative, primarily focusing on climate adaptation, resilience, and addressing loss and damage. Additionally, she contributes substantial insights to support international efforts in climate action, including promoting a just transition and climate finance.
Before her tenure at WRI, Bhandari was the Chief for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management at the Asian Development Bank. During this time, she was pivotal in the institution's commitment to ambitious climate finance targets and aligning its activities with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change objectives. Furthermore, she managed the allocation of climate funding utilizing ADB's internal funds, which encompassed investments in the private sector. Her efforts emphasized a solid commitment to adaptation and resilience.

Before that, in her capacity as the Coordinator of Finance, Technology, and Capacity Building at the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Bhandari led support for international negotiations about the $100 billion climate finance target and the establishment of critical entities such as the Green Climate Fund and the Standing Committee on Finance. Her career began at The Energy & Resources Institute, a prominent Indian think tank.

Bhandari actively participates as a board member of the Gold Standard Foundation and serves on the editorial board of the Climate Policy journal. She is also engaged in advisory roles for various initiatives, including a joint effort by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and the International Science Council concerning sustainability pathways in a post-COVID world. Additionally, she has recently joined the advisory panel established by the Climate Bonds Initiative to contribute her expertise on Transition Finance for companies. Furthermore, Preety is the lead author of the sixth assessment report of the IPCC, focusing on the Mitigation of Climate Change.

She also evaluated submissions for the Climate CoLab at MIT, a platform dedicated to harnessing innovative concepts for addressing climate change challenges.
Currently, she guides various initiatives led by organizations such as the 2050 Pathways Platform, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, and the International Science Council. Furthermore, she is actively contributing as a Lead Author to the sixth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Additionally, she holds a position on the Board of the Gold Standard Foundation.
