Early Life and Education:

Dr. Avery Demond was born and raised in New York City under Unitarian and Quaker traditions, which taught her the importance of respect and responsibility toward the community, including the environment. She spent significant time with her siblings in nearby parks and public swimming pools, with water fascinating her, as all life depends on it. This experience led her to attend Williams College for her BA in Biology. She holds a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from MIT and a doctorate in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Demond also holds a Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Eastern Michigan University. She is a professional engineer in the State of Michigan.

Career:

Dr. Demond is a retired professor who has worked at the University of Michigan in the civil and environmental engineering department. Her research analyzed the movement and removal of organic contaminants from subsurface soils and has included projects studying soil contamination near Dow Chemical, groundwater remediation, municipal landfill leachate on soil properties, and organic compound chemistry. In addition to her role at the University of Michigan, she served as Coordinator of the Department of Energy's Subsurface Science Program Multiphase Fluid Flow Subprogram and Associate Editor for Environmental Engineering Science. She has also applied her knowledge and expertise to boards, including the Board of Engineering Education and the DOE Environmental Restoration Priority Committee. Dr. Demond is a professional engineer in the State of Michigan with certifications in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.
