The journey itself is a profound teacher” - Carolina Peña-Alarcón, 2024.

Early Life and Education:

Carolina Peña-Alarcón was born in the vibrant town of Camiri, Bolivia, where she grew up surrounded by the natural wonders of Santa Cruz and La Pas, both of which fostered a profound connection to the environment. However, the turning point in her environmental interests came when Hurricane Tomas hit. Living in Saint Lucia, she witnessed the devastation brought by the disaster, which fueled her commitment to environmental advocacy. This would inspire her to pursue her graduate degree to lay the foundation for an activist and sustainable development career. Peña-Alarcón attended the Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz de la Sierra for her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management. She participated in a month-long, multi-country European architectural and cultural studies program during her program. She holds a Master of Science in Environmental and Energy Management from George Washington University. Peña-Alarcón also holds a Project Management Certificate from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies.

Career:

Peña-Alarcón previously worked as an Assistant Auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers – Service Delivery Center (1997-1998), conducting financial statement audits for banking institutions and credit unions. Afterward, she briefly joined Empresa Petrolera Chaco S.A. as an Administrative Assistant in 1998 before starting as a Corporate Loan and Trade Officer at Citi in 1999. With Citi, she analyzed financial documentation to assess the financial soundness of corporate clients within the energy and agriculture sectors. In 2002, Peña-Alarcón served as a Project Assistant for the Organization of American States, where she assisted in preparing budget and expenditure reports, coordinated administrative duties, and coordinated and recruited interns.

Peña-Alarcón joined the Pan American Health Organization in 2003 as a Project Assistant. In the role, she helped develop a manual promoting quality of life for Latin America and the Caribbean. She left in 2004 to become a Specialist and Project Coordinator with Organización de los Estados Americanos. She coordinated a $1.3 million Biodiversity Grant Program in Washington, D.C. that helped NGOs and local institutions improve decision-making through data readiness. Peña-Alarcón was promoted to Specialist, Regional Project Manager in 2008, where her responsibilities expanded to include developing the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Program, supporting government officials to establish the National Energy Policy and Action Plan in Antigua and other municipalities, and creating an energy literacy program, among other duties. From 2013 to 2016, she served as a Specialist, Project Manager working in sustainable energy for Latin American and Caribbean communities. In the role, she grew the organizations' previous work and monitored and evaluated various funds.

From 2016 to 2019, Peña-Alarcón worked as an Independent Contractor for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, working with management at various government agencies in Latin America and the Caribbean to ensure access and availability of the Clean Energy Solutions Center program. She also led webinars and provided technical assistance to clients and officials. In 2017, she joined the Pan American Health Organization again as an Independent Contractor. One of Peña-Alarcón's most significant career highlights involved the creation of Terra Solutions LLC, a venture born out of a personal calling in late 2023. Beyond professional milestones associated with starting her own company, the organization reflects her deeply rooted commitment to sustainability and environmental justice. It is rooted in passion and aimed at creating positive change. She states that Terra Solutions embodies her resilience, learning, and sincere desire to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

Mentoring Others:

Peña-Alarcón cites Juana Roman as a transformative mentor in her journey beyond professional strategy and career development who also supported her personal growth. Roman’s insight on workforce development as a catalyst for transformation has helped guide Peña-Alarcón’s approach to creating meaningful change. Such mentorship was particularly transformative for a program she was involved in, which integrated sustainable energy into the school science curriculum and critical thinking skills. However, Roman’s mentorship has gone beyond traditional professional development and has impacted Peña-Alarcón’s career and personal life. Peña-Alarcón has also had the opportunity to mentor others through the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in 2021, where she shared insights, facilitated discussions, and empowered emerging leaders in the climate space through knowledge and skill sharing. She highlights that these are very fulfilling experiences as she gets to help others contribute to one of the most pressing issues of our time, a shared value connecting people across disciplines and backgrounds.

Advice to Young Professionals:

In reflecting on advice she would give to young professionals, Peña-Alarcón shares advice that has been pivotal in her own journey - "embrace the uncertainty and be fearless in pursuing your passions. It's okay to not have all the answers right away; the journey itself is a profound teacher" (2024). She further articulates the importance of identifying mentors who align with your interests to develop personally and professionally. Peña-Alarcón emphasizes the importance of staying true to yourself and letting "your authenticity shine through in every endeavor" and that "setbacks are stepping stones, and each challenge is an opportunity to discover your resilience" (2024). To find a truly meaningful and rewarding career, Peña-Alarcón says to find the balance between professional growth and personal fulfillment.
