Clifton Peters

United States Department of Agriculture Liaison [Retired]
Alcorn State University

Clifton Peters is an agriculturalist, educator, and soil conservationist. He retired from Alcorn State University in 2014, where he served as a Liaison between Alcorn State University and the United States Department of Agriculture for 40 years. In this role, he helped educate and recruit several students from underrepresented backgrounds to the field of agriculture and careers in federal service, including the USDA. Peters also previously served with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).

Early Life and Education:

Clifton Peters is the ninth of 14 children born to Ford and Frankie Peters in Tylertown, Mississippi. He grew up in the farm business, where his father was a sharecropper, and the family operated a dairy farm. During his youth and teenage years, Peters intended to pursue something outside of agriculture, as working on a farm every day was laborious. However, as a senior in high school, his ag teacher told him that there was more to agriculture than just farming, getting him in touch with Alcorn State University. At this time, Peters was interested in teaching, so he enrolled in agricultural education at Alcorn State University.

Career:

As part of his graduation requirements at Alcorn State University, Peters completed his student teaching at Prentiss County Vocational Technical Center in Prentiss, Mississippi. He also interned with the Soil Conservation Service, now the Natural Resource Conservation Service with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA NRCS). This experience led to his first job after earning his bachelor's degree as a soil conservationist. With the organization, he would work in six different locations throughout Pennsylvania, eventually becoming the District Conservationist. While in his most recent role with the NRCS, he became involved with the Equal Employment Opportunity organization, which identified ways to recruit minorities to the field of agriculture. As part of this program, he helped recruit at local high schools and community colleges. He would transition to his most recent role as USDA Liaison at Alcorn State University, his alma mater, to continue recruiting under-represented individuals to agricultural careers. Peters' dedication and knowledge helped numerous people graduate from Alcorn and obtain jobs with the USDA. He also helped the university apply for and receive grants, including $1 million from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, to install bike trails and pedestrian paths on campus.

Peters highlights that he "got the three-pronged blessing" - teaching, working in agriculture, and helping others. Throughout his career, he got to help others pursue agriculture careers, which fit his personality perfectly. He highlights that "it's almost not like work!" Peters retired in 2014 after 40 years of service. Still, his work leaves a legacy at Alcorn, the USDA, and the field of agriculture, evident by the number of individuals he helped get jobs within these organizations.

Importance of Mentoring:

Peters' role as a USDA Liaison made him a mentor to many students, from high school to college. In particular, he helped underrepresented individuals pursue careers in agriculture, many earning jobs in federal agencies, including the USDA and the NRCS.
