Kahil Kettering is a dedicated nonprofit leader with expertise in program development and implementation, focusing on conservation projects. Kettering holds two master’s degrees in Global Environmental Policy and Nonprofit management. Kettering has worked at organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Cadmus Group, and the National Park Conservational Association. Kettering was recently appointed Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy’s Marland/DC Chapter.

Early Life and Education: 

Kahil Kettering attended American University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. Kettering continued his career at American University, earning a Master of Arts in Global Environmental Policy in 2007. In 2015, Kettering completed a Master of Public Management in Nonprofit/Public/Organizational Management.

Career: 

While working on his first master’s degree, Kettering began his environmental career in 2005 with the US Environmental Protection Agency as an Eco Associate. In 2007, Kettering began as a Senior Analyst for The Cadmus Group, Inc., continuing his work in the D.C., Virginia, and Maryland (DMV) Areas for another year. In 2008, Kettering moved to the Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area to work as a Biscayne Restoration Program Analyst with the National Parks Conservational Association (NPCA). Kettering worked in this position until 2013.

In 2015, Kettering became the Urban Conservation Program Director of The Nature Conservancy’s Maryland/DC Chapter (TNC). From 2018 to 2021, Kettering was the Chief Executive Officer for District Stormwater, LLC. District Stormwater is a TNC conservation program Kettering helped launch that creates Stormwater Retention Credits for DC by designing, financing, installing, and managing stormwater projects. In 2021, he became the Bezos Earth Fund Project Director. In this role, he led the administration of a $100 million gift TNC received from the Bezos Earth Fund.

In 2023, Kettering was appointed Executive Director of the Maryland/DC Chapter of TNC. His work will impact communities from Western  Maryland to the Chesapeake Bay, including large metro centers of Baltimore and DC.

Importance of Mentoring: 

Kettering cites his networking opportunities while studying at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy as crucial in his work. The relationships he fostered in grad school have led to numerous significant collaborations at The Nature Conservancy. As Kettering says, “Relationships are the currency on which we get things done” (UMD, 2023).
