Monica Jahan Bose is a Bangladeshi-American artist, activist, and environmental lawyer. Based out of Washington, D.C., Bose has held positions as an Attorney at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Arnold & Porter. Her artistry has been featured in many exhibits and papers, including the Washington Post, the Miami Herald, the Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn, the Anacostia Arts Center in D.C., and the Brentwood Arts Exchange in Maryland. Among Bose’s many critically acclaimed exhibits are “Storytelling with Saris,” “Seven Minutes on the B67,” and “WRAPture.” Bose is a climate activist who utilizes mixed media to spark conversations about women’s rights and climate change.

Early Life and Education: 

Monica Jahan Bose was born in the United Kingdom. Her family is from a village in Bangladesh threatened by climate change due to the rise of the sea level - Katakhali Village on Barabaishdia Island. She is an artist and climate activist with training in the Practice of Art (Painting) and Mathematics at Wesleyan University, a Diploma in Art from Santiniketan, India, and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School. Her background and heritage have helped shape her work as an artist, activist, and lawyer.

Career: 

Bose has diverse experience in law, policy, and art. She worked as an Attorney for Berle, Kass, and Case in New York after receiving her J.D. from Columbia from 1991 to 1994. Afterward, she joined Arnold & Porter as an Associate. She briefly left the organization from 1998 to 2000 to work overseas in Tokyo, Japan, as a Manager at PwC. Bose returned to the United States to work with Arnold & Porter, this time as a Senior Associate. Following this, she served as an Attorney Advisor with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 2005 to 2006. Bose started her own practice, thus serving as Principal Attorney at the Law Office of Monica Jahan Bose. Her firm operated for almost six years, from 2013 to 2019

In 2010, Bose opened the Studio of Monica Jahan Bose, where she is a freelance artist focused on gender, women’s literacy, climate change, and sexuality. Her work includes “Storytelling with Saris,” a long-term art and advocacy project in collaboration with Katakhali that was displayed at the Brentwood Art Exchange in Maryland. Bose has hosted Sari Climate Pledge Workshops since 2015, in which she makes saris with women and some men in the United States, Greece, and France. Her work has also been featured in numerous galleries, including the Villa Terrace Decorate Arts Museum, the Civilian Art Project in Washington, D.C., and the Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn.

From 2018-2019, Bose’s work “WRAPture” was displayed in five buildings, including the Anacostia Arts Center in D.C. This exhibit consisted of 65 18-foot-long saris created by women in Katakhali and Anacostia and sought to spark a discussion on climate change. Bose’s storytelling and advocacy using art was also evident in her “Seven Minutes on the B67” exhibit at the Open Source Gallery, which focused on connecting Brooklyn and Bangladeshi immigrants. Her work has also appeared in print in the Washington Post, the Milwaukee Sentinel, the Japan Times, all major newspapers in Bangladesh, the Miami Herald, and Art Asia Pacific.

Bose has served on the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective Board of Directors and currently serves on the Bangladeshi Women’s Organization in D.C. as a Board Member. She has received numerous awards and acclaim for her artistry. She was awarded $175,000 by the D.C. Commission of the Arts & Humanities through the Public Art Building Communities to support the enhancement of District neighborhoods through public art. In 2022, she received a $5,000 grant from the Washing Project for the Arts. She has also given presentations and conducted other workshops, including a webinar hosted by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center on social change amid the pandemic and a workshop in partnership with the International Center for Climate Change and Development. Her expertise has earned her many well-deserved accolades and helps highlight the various ways to communicate science.
