Dr. Monica Miles is a STEM Education expert specializing in environmental justice, equity, and inclusion, currently teaching at the University of Buffalo as an Assistant Professor of Engineering Education. She holds vast experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, and education. She has worked with several institutions on diversifying students, staff, and faculty, including Cornell University, Vanderbilt University, and the Physician Assistant Education Association.

Dr. Monica Miles holds an MA in Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences and a PhD in Science Education from the University at Buffalo.
Dr. Miles previously taught middle school science in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system, teaching eighth-grade science, where she helped improve student proficiency in the end-of-grade science tests to 91.5% (2011-2012). She continued serving students as a Job Readiness Specialist with Iroquois Job Corps, helping students develop skills for employment through hands-on instruction (2012-2013). During this time, Dr. Miles also served as Director of the Liberty Partnerships Program at Niagara County Community College (2012-2015). Before graduating with her PhD from the University of Buffalo in 2017, Dr. Miles worked as the Equity and Inclusion Coordinator for the Education Collaborative of Western New York (2015-2017). As Coordinator, she worked to improve equity and inclusion within the Western New York education system, which included planning the annual student multicultural workshop, developing and delivering seminars for faculty, and helping hire underrepresented faculty and staff by coordinating with schools in the area.
After earning her PhD in 2017, Dr. Miles completed her postdoctoral research at Vanderbilt University, where she completed research on diversity engineering faculty (2017-2019). In 2019, she joined Cornell University as a Great Lakes Literacy Specialist (2019-2021). Dr. Miles then worked at the Physician Assistant Education Association as Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer and Chief Research Officer (2021-2022) and taught at Columbia University's Teachers College as a Visiting Assistant Professor of STEM Education (2022-2023). Dr. Miles currently works as an Educational Consultant for Mother Earth Literacies, where she works to bring the interdisciplinary, justice-oriented curriculum to classrooms in New York (2021-present) and as an Assistant Professor of Engineering Education at the University of Buffalo (2023-present). At the university, she teaches courses on equity and inclusion in education, approaches to science curriculum, and strategies for inclusive classrooms. Dr. Miles also conducts reach on environmental justice education, critical race theory, and social justice pedagogies.
