Rachel Harris is a Business Agent at the Writers Guild of America East. Writers Guild of America East is a labor union that represents writers across disciplines. Harris’s educational training is in environmental science, chemistry, climate variability, and public health. Her expertise has taken her to a variety of organizations, such as the World Resources Institute, the New York City Council, the New York State Nurses Association, the Michael Blake for New York State Assembly Campaign, and the Women’s Environment and Development Organization, among others.

Early Life and Education: 

Rachel Harris attended Barnard College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science in 2003. While there, she received the Mellon Minority Undergraduate Fellowship, a program dedicated to supporting diversity in the humanities. She completed her Masters in Climate and Society at Columbia University in New York in 2006. During the program, she focused on climate change/variability impact on health and adaptation strategies to minimize impacts.

Career: 

Following her graduation from Barnard College, she was a Research Associate at the Environmental Law Institute from 2003 to 2005, where she authored and edited institutional publications with other staff members. Project topics Harris contributed to while with the organization include brownfields, invasive species, capacity building, and indoor air quality. Harris then returned to school to obtain her graduate degree at Columbia University. At Columbia, she was a Research Assistant at the International Research Institute for Climate & Society, researching climate variability and its impact on respiratory health. The summer after she graduated from Columbia in 2006, Harris was a Vulnerability and Adaptation Intern with the World Resources Institute (WRI). At WRI, she drew on her knowledge of climate change and variability and wrote reports on preparation for natural disasters and global adaptation strategies. From 2007 to 2008, Harris was a Research Associate at RWMA, Inc., contributing to projects related to the impacts of radioactive waste and occupational exposure.

In 2008, Harris joined the Women’s Environment & Development Organization as a U.S. Climate Change Campaign Coordinator, helping advance Women Demand Action on Climate Change, an initiative to mobilize women across the U.S. to demand climate action. She also served as an Advocacy Coordinator from 2010 to 2013 and focused on international policy advocacy for sustainable development and gender equity. Harris’s expertise helped her become a Consultant and Senior Policy Advisor with the Women’s Environment & Development Organization in 2013. From 2013 to 2014, Harris was a Consultant, Climate Change, and Gender Equity Advisor for Global Insight International, developing and evaluating their internal programs and processes. In the role, she drew on intersectional knowledge to conduct surveys, interviews, analyze data, and present findings to clients.

Throughout her career, Harris canvassed and directed campaigns with organizations, including Community Voices Heard and Campaign Louisiana. In 2014, Harris was the Deputy Campaign Manager and Field Director for Michael Blake for the N.Y. State Assembly. From 2014 to 2016, Harris served as a Legislative Policy Analyst with the New York City Council, highlighting her expertise in policy and government and its connection to a broad range of topics. From 2016 to 2020, Harris worked as a Program Representative at the New York State Nurses Association. Since 2021, Harris has worked at the Writers Guild of America East as a Business Agent, a labor union representing members who write for motion pictures, television, online media, and the news. In this role, she represents employees and focuses on capacity building, labor organizing, employee rights, and union representation.
