Early Life and Education

Dr. Samniqueka Joi-Weaver Halsey was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. During the seventh grade, she won the city-wide science fair for her project, “The effects of different types of water on tomato plant growth.” Her early love of science led her to attend Northeastern Illinois University for her BS in Biology. She holds an MS in Environmental Biology from Chicago State University and a PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Dr. Halsey also has an MBA from the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.

Career

Dr. Halsey previously worked for the University of Colorado as a Field Assistant, where she monitored prairie dog populations, including setting up traps, tagging and releasing, and collecting blood samples (2010). Afterward, she volunteered in the Butterfly Lab at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2010). As a volunteer, she prepared food for species at the lab and ensured compliance with USDA regulations. Dr. Halsey taught at Cics Longwood as a Substitute Teacher (2011-2012) and a Lecturer at the College of Lake County (2014). At the College, she taught a course on environmental biology. In 2012, Dr. Halsey joined The Morton Arboretum as a Conservation Biology Intern (2012-2014) before becoming a GIS Research Assistant (2014-2015). As an Intern, she studied the population variability of Pitcher's thistle, an endangered species. Applying her skills in GIS, Dr. Halsey helped the organization with vegetation and tree density visualization. After earning her PhD, Dr. Halsey completed her postdoctoral research at the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is an Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Health and Faculty Fellow in the Office of the Vice Chancellor & Dean at the University of Missouri. Dr. Halsey's research utilizes GIS, long-term data sets, and remote sensing to understand biodiversity conservation and disease systems. Her current research analyzes the interactions between black-legged ticks and wildlife hosts related to Lyme disease. In addition to conducting research, she teaches courses on natural resource biometrics, ecosystem management, wildlife disease ecology, and ecological restoration.
