“I sincerely believe that it can be an “and” not an “or” when it comes to energy production and environmental protection.” - Shawn Simmons, 2020
Shawn Simmons was born in Louisiana on January 1, 1971, and raised in Texas. Her mother was a math teacher, and her father was a wage worker serving as a chemical operator in a petrochemical industry in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for 33 years. She grew up enjoying math and science classes. She credits her middle school science teacher, Ms. Moore, for introducing her to being an engineer. Dr. Simmons learned about petroleum engineering on her visit to the University of Oklahoma, where she saw a life-size working drilling rig. She asked, “What kind of engineer gets to work with that piece of equipment?” She was so fascinated and couldn’t wait to learn all about petroleum engineering facilities.
Dr. Simmons attended the High School for Engineering Professionals in Houston, which helped her solidify her interest in engineering. She had the opportunity to work in the oil and gas industry right after high school graduation.
She then received her bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from The University of Oklahoma in 1993. Her university hosted career fairs, and she got an internship offer with Exxon, now ExxonMobil. Later, she received a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Rice University in 1999 and a Ph.D. in environmental toxicology from Texas Southern University in 2003.
Dr. Simmons completed six internships with ExxonMobil before they offered her full-time employment. She held various roles at ExxonMobil, starting as an environmental and regulatory supervisor from 2007 to 2014. From 2007 to 2012, Simmons worked and lived in Lagos, Nigeria, with her family. She led the environmental permitting efforts for the company’s Gulf Coast Growth Venture, a $6 billion chemical project. She expanded her role to serve offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Australia, and Europe from 2009 to 2014. She also served as the water, waste, state regulatory manager, and environmental and permitting manager for over six years before becoming the Environmental & Regulatory Manager for all of ExxonMobil’s Russia operations in May 2020. After the company divested from this operation, she became ExxonMobil’s Safety, Security, Health, and Environment Manager.
She has learned through her work the necessity of finding a good balance between understanding energy needs and our environmental footprint (S. Simmons, personal communications, May 30, 2023).
Many of the challenges she faced in her roles had to do with her international experience. There is a lack of regulatory standards in many countries she worked at outside the US. Dr. Simmons has helped the corporation apply the basic standards knowing it was the right thing to do. Another important challenge she faced was changing the narratives in the behavioral approach to projects. She helped ensure that environmental narratives will not be an afterthought for projects that get implemented. Over the last two decades, her team has focused on an integrative approach—choosing based on the least Carbon footprints and optimal output reliability (S. Simmons, personal communications, May 30, 2023).
Dr. Simmons has worked for ExxonMobil for 23 years. She and her husband, Philip, have two children, Jonathan and Jacquelyn. She is passionate about volunteer service and leadership development. Dr. Simmons credits a supportive family, friends, and countless formal and informal mentors who have helped her achieve academic, personal, and professional goals.
Dr. Simmons received many accolades during her undergraduate years, including the Black Engineer of the Year Student Leadership Award, Miss Black University of Oklahoma, and the Volunteer Spirit Award from General Motors Corporation. Her volunteer service continues today. Dr. Simmons is an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated member and has served as an at-Large Director for Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation. She works with several non-profit organizations, including the Child Care Council of Greater Houston, Bayou Land Conservancy, and United Way. Dr. Simmons holds professional memberships with the Society of Women Engineers, the National Society of Black Engineers, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Dr. Simmons has received the “Tomorrow’s Leader Today” Award, the YMCA Young African-American Achiever Award, and was featured in Ebony magazine as one of the “30 Leaders of the Future”. She actively participates with the Black Employees Success Team at ExxonMobil as the organization’s president.
Dr. Simmons considers a lot of people as her mentors along the way. In college, she was inspired by the perseverance and resilience of Pamela McCauley, the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Engineering in Oklahoma. At work, several transformational managers pushed her to think outside the box and helped her build more confidence. She also received a lot of leadership advice from them.
Dr. Simmons has enjoyed a 23-year career in the industry, all in the safety, security, health, and environmental job family. She wrote in a blog published by the Society of Women Engineers (2020):
“Combining my petroleum engineering background with my environmental expertise lets me hold a variety of assignments and understand how to effectively balance these two important aspects. I sincerely believe that it can be an “and” not an “or” when it comes to energy production and environmental protection. I love taking on the hard problems and bringing people together.”
“One of the best experiences I had was a 5-year assignment in Africa. My family and I had a great experience. I got the opportunity to work with a diverse team to really bring value to the business and the community. While there, I took my passion for mentoring young students to a Women’s Network that sponsored an Introduce a Girl to Science and Engineering program. The program exposes engineering to approximately 30 girls a year at a nearby school. It has been sustained and has been ongoing for the last ten years” (2023).
“Define success for yourself and know what your values are. Approach life with a balanced perspective. You want to love what you do.”
“Know your why’s and write it down—Why are you pursuing a particular industry? Re-assess as needed and ask the question, “Am I still passionate about this.” You will discover your why’s as you grow and mature.”
“Always along the way, have mentors or friends who will help guide you. Self-assessment is a gift you give yourself, and feedback is a gift that others give you.” (S. Simmons, personal communications, May 30, 2023).
